The EU-funded project PROMOTioN, in which the Foundation OFFSHORE WIND ENERGY is a project partner, will host its mid-term conference “PROMOTioN – Shaping a meshed HVDC offshore grid for the Northern Seas - First findings on grid concepts, technological innovations and barriers” on 6 June 2018 in Amsterdam. The conference will give representatives from politics and industry the opportunity to discuss the project’s interim results.

Iberdrola has announced that it has successfully completed the construction of all 70 wind turbines at the Wikinger offshore wind farm in the German Baltic Sea. The wind turbines of type AD 5-135 were installed by Adwen and Fred. Olsen Windcarrier.

On the fringe of the EUFORES 17th Inter-Parliamentary Meeting on Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in Tallinn, WindEurope and the national wind energy associations of the Baltic Sea states have signed the Baltic Sea Declaration. For Germany the German Offshore Wind Energy Foundation has signed the Declaration.

The offshore wind projects Triton Knoll (860 MW), Hornsea Project 2 (1386 MW) and Moray Offshore Windfarm East (950 MW) are the winners of the second British auction round based on the Contracts for Difference (CfD) principle. Together the three projects will provide 3.2 GW of new capacity in the UK, enough to power 3.3 million homes by 2023.

On June 20th, the Board of Trustees elected Dr. Ursula Prall as the new Chair of the Executive Board of the Foundation at the 24th Board of Trustees meeting in Hannover. The promoted lawyer began her honorary function on July 1st.

The European renewable associations today called on the European Commission to work towards a quicker expansion of renewable energies in Europe by 2030.

With over 500 GW now installed worldwide, wind power has become the leading source of new power generation in Europe and in many countries around the world. In 2016 alone $112.5 billion were invested in wind power globally, and the industry now employs 1.2 million people making it one of the fastest growing industrial segments in the world. Wind power has become a major driver for a sustainable energy future.

On June 6, representatives of the Belgian, Danish and German governments, as well as representatives of the European wind energy industry signed a joint statement at the Offshore Wind Energy 2017 Conference in London. In the statement the signatories are committed to an ambitious offshore expansion by 2030 and to further advance regional cooperation in the field of offshore wind energy.

On 7 June 2017, the PROMOTioN project partners invite interested stakeholders from industry, policy, academia and associations to attend their first stakeholder event this year alongside the Offshore Wind Energy 2017 Conference in London.

In June 2016, the North Seas Energy Cooperation was launched with the signing of a political declaration by the ten energy minister from German, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, the Netherlands, France, Luxembourg, Belgium and the United Kingdom. On the 23rd of March, the initiative organized its first stakeholder event in Brussels within framework of the “North Seas Energy Forum” with over 200 participants from the industry and associations. The primary objectives of this cooperation are the cost-efficient expansion of offshore wind energy and the further interconnection of the North Seas countries.
